Please help us spread the word about a FREE camp for girls to explore their digital world in a career setting, Teens Exploring Careers, June 16-21 at Casper College. Register at https://www.cyberwyoming.org/camp/ or contact us at info@cyberwyoming.org or 307.314.2188.

There are over half a million job openings in cybersecurity alone, with employers having difficulty finding qualified employees. Only 26% of the computing workforce is comprised of women. Why?

The CyberWyoming Alliance held focus groups with high school-aged girls in 4 locations across the state to find out why girls weren’t interested in tech or cybersecurity careers. We found out what they were curious about and then built this camp with the help of Casper College and a grant from the Daniel’s Fund to show how tech is integrated into their areas of interest.

June 16-21 we are testing two mini-camp scenarios at once. The first scenario highlights intellectual property theft in a business/creative firm. It will be presented to the campers in a murder mystery setting highlighting digital forensics and data protection. It is designed to teach students about copyrights, trademarks, intellectual property, confidentiality, and crime investigation. The girls will solve the mystery and catch the crooks. The second is a healthcare ransomware scenario where, after touring a real hospital, the young women will play the parts in admissions, the emergency room, radiology, billing, and social work. But the staged hospital will experience a ransomware attack and no incident response plan is available. The girls will save the day for the hospital. Both themes will feature industry speakers, real-life situations, and fun activities over the 5-day camp. Once the camp scenarios are tested, the curriculum and materials will be free to any community college or university in the region. Each scenario is designed to be run over a long weekend.
